Freedom is a Mustang mare from the Antelope Hills HMA in Wyoming. It’s described by the BLM as being “in the middle of nowhere.” It is a herd with little to no human interaction until these horses are thrust into the human world after being gathered. Freedom, even after several years with us, is still wary of people. She shows curiosity and she settles down, but if she is left for a time it’s like starting at ground zero—wary even of touch. Like my other Mustangs, she has become an incredible teacher for me. You cannot march in with an agenda and expect to accomplish it. She will NOT comply, but if given consideration, she will yield. I’ve had a goal for myself to be more consistent and to work with at least one of the horses each day. My intention on Freedom’s day was simply for her to find comfort around me. She started off in the corral as far away from me as possible. She can be friendly, but not when she sees something in your hand. She stays far away from new things (or even the halter which she has at times learned to accept). Slowly we came to an agreement that it was okay and I spent my time working on gentle touch, which even that she shies away from initially. Her mane needed attention and so I slowly and methodically worked on it. When she became uncomfortable, we adjusted. After probably 30 minutes to an hour, she began to relax, to yawn and as you can see at the end of the video, to even seek me out. Freedom clearly shows you how she feels! These are actually my favorite kind of horses—they are the ones labeled “reactive.” I don’t have to guess with these horses. I know what they are feeling. Most horses, living successfully with humans are not like that. They are resigned to do whatever they are asked which is why they are embraced by the human world. But does that mean they are enjoying their time with you? They will give subtle signs—running away instead of coming to you, tossing their heads, resisting tack… these are signs you can learn from if you are ready to listen. Just think for a bit—what is it like for your horse to be in your presence? What energy are you bringing into their world? 🥰🎥 @the.touch.of.a.mustang #Mustang #horse #horsepower #inspiration #motivation #lifelessons #life #animals #rescue #adopt #save #hearttouching #heart #pets #shortsfeed #shortsviral #shortsvideo #shorts
