I rarely blanket my horses. Even when it’s -50 out. Horses grow those thick fluffy coats for a reason and blankets suppress that natural insulation. I don’t clip my horses so they have no need to wear a blanket. I keep them fat and healthy during the winter months. One thing I do do to ensure their comfort is provide ample amounts of forage. Horses ferment forage in their hind gut in turn producing energy. Energy production means warm bodies, ears and hooves. I also make sure my horses have access to water and salt. Horses need water with their forage. I put drop in tank heaters in water troughs in hopes to keep them from freezing. Sometimes it’s so cold I still have to break ice. But as long as I do that every few hours so they can drink they fair super well during those blustery cold days. @tmhokens
