I love the cold… I love the cold.. 😂 There’s so many challenges when managing and caring for livestock. These can be exponentially more difficult when the temperatures reach -30 to -40 like they have the last few days. First and foremost, I make sure all my horses have access to full water tanks and hay 24/7. I use @haychix hay nets to reduce waste, prevent my hay from blowing away, and allow the horses the slow graze. Horses are grazing animals. They actually can stay really warm during these cold temperatures, especially when they have forage to eat. A horse’s hindgut ferments forage which produces energy (heat) keeping them warm. I make sure all my troughs are full of water before the weather gets really cold because even the frost free hydrants and a drained hose will freeze up. To prevent my tanks from freezing I drop in a 1500kW tank heater but since my property gets a fair bit of wind, I usually still have to break a top layer of ice open for the horses to drink every few hours. The tank heater threshold seems to be below -30 plus a windchill and I will have a couple inches of ice build up to break thru. . 🥰🎥 @tmhokens . #ranchlife #farmlife #animals #horses #winter #weather #freezing #cowgirl #farmer #rancher #ice #winterstorm #equestrian
