Is your horse experiencing shoulder dysfunction? Some signs of shoulder dysfunction include: - Shortened forward phase of movement - Decreased range of motion - Toe dragging - Tripping - Abduction of the leg to avoid bending the joint - Pain to palpation of the shoulder area The movement demonstrated in this video is known as joint mobilization. Joint mobilizations enhance joint range of motion, alleviate pain, reduce stiffness, enhance joint stability, improve coordination, boost muscular control, and refine joint mechanics. Joint mobilizations work by applying a targeted force to a stiff, painful, or compromised joint to enhance its overall function. Specifically, the movement showcased in this video involves circumduction of the shoulder joint. Circumduction is characterized by circular motion applied to the joint while gently exerting traction, where the proximal end remains fixed, and the distal end is free to move in a circular manner. The application of gentle traction serves to expand the joint space by elongating soft tissue structures and separating bony surfaces. The benefits of traction therapy encompass reducing the transmission of pain, interrupting the pain-spasm cycle, alleviating pressure on pain-sensitive structures, and increasing the joint space. If you aim to support your horse's joint health and mobility, consider incorporating mobilizations into your care routine.
