DESCRIPTION
✨ In 1872, English photographer Eadweard Muybridge started experimenting with photographing movement. He wanted to explore whether, at any point in a horse’s stride, all four feet simultaneously left the ground. Muybridge created a series of photographs called, “The Horse in Motion," published in 1878.
✨ Later, he created a series of works on animal locomotion called, "Plate Number 626," featuring an unnamed Black jockey riding a thoroughbred mare named Annie.
✨ In 1880, Muybridge started projecting moving painted versions of his recordings with his zoopraxiscope. This was the earliest known motion picture exhibition based on actual recordings of motion. The Black jockey featured in "Plate Number 626" remains unknown.
