We talk about “it takes two to tango.” But horses are not negotiating from the prefrontal cortex. They are responding from the stimulus: stimulus- NS State - response A tightened jaw. A forward-tilted body. A rushed breath. That enters the space before your words ever do. Horses bring history in their bodies. So do we. But the responsibility for awareness belongs to the human. Not because we are to blame. Because we have the capacity to notice. That’s the difference between dominance and partnership. That’s the difference between correction and reflection. And when we take ownership of our internal state, something shifts. The horse doesn’t need to “win.” The horse doesn’t need to brace. They simply respond to what feels safer. If you work with horses, this isn’t about guilt It’s about progress over perfection.
