I’ve been turning an idea over in my mind lately: Is it really healing, or is it just growing? We use the word “healing” all the time, but it implies returning to a previous state. I don’t think that’s ever truly possible. I believe our nervous systems are as unique as our fingerprints, and major life events can permanently alter that emotional fingerprint. We are profoundly changed by our experiences. So, what if the ache we feel during these times isn’t the wound mending, but the whole of us expanding? The discomfort of becoming someone new. The sorrow of letting go of who we used to be. The shock of seeing the world with new, sometimes sadder, but wiser eyes. Thinking of it this way has been a comfort. It means the pain has a purpose. It’s the signal of growth. It’s the feeling of life remaking you. It means your discomfort isn’t a sign that you’re failing to heal; it’s a sign that you are in the middle of a profound transformation. Your pain isn’t a sign you’re broken; it’s a sign you’re growing. Your journey isn’t a regression back to an old self, but an evolution into a new one. You’re not just mending, you’re evolving. I’m curious if this feels true for you too.
