Your shoulders lift. Your breath shifts. Your pace changes. These signals often appear before we consciously identify what we are reacting to. The nervous system is constantly sensing information — not only from the environment around us, but from inside the body. This ability is called interoception. Interoception is how the brain becomes aware of signals like: • breathing rhythm • heart rate • muscle tension • subtle emotional shifts Some people notice these signals easily. Others only recognize them when something becomes uncomfortable or overwhelming. Neither is a flaw. It simply reflects how the nervous system learned to allocate attention. In the paddock, horses often notice these signals long before we do. Their nervous systems are constantly reading subtle changes in breathing, posture, and movement. Spending time with them can remind us how to return to our own bodies. Sometimes regulation begins with something very small: a pause a breath a moment of noticing Peace & Love, Melissa The Paddock as Laboratory If you’re curious about what your body might be noticing, comment BODY and I’ll send you the quick body check-in I teach before stepping into the paddock (or any important moment). 🥰🎥 @melissajeanpt #nervoussystemregulation #interoception #somaticexperiencing #paddockaslab #horses #healing #therapy #biology #science #equestrian #animals #calming #soothing #relaxing
