People often ask me how horses shift out of stress so easily. The truth is — we can too. It just takes more. Think of a little kid. They cry hard, then five minutes later they’re laughing again. That’s not avoidance — that’s a nervous system that hasn’t learned to override itself yet. The human prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed until age 25. That’s the part of us that replays, rehearses, and second-guesses. Little kids have less of that interference. So do horses. Their body responds to what is true in this moment. Ours wants to do the same — it just has to move through everything we’re thinking about the moment before it can land in it. That’s not a flaw. That’s being human. And it’s why horses are such powerful teachers.
