Large barn fire in Larimer County cause about $400,000 in damages, injures one horse LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A large barn was caught on fire Wednesday morning in Larimer County, injuring one horse and caused nearly half a million dollars in damage. Poudre Fire Authority said one horse sustained burns and was transported for treatment. The fire burned the barn and a nearby garage and caused an estimated $400,000 in damage. At about 5 a.m., firefighters said crews responded to the 600 block of South Boulder Circle along Highway 14, just east of Fort Collins. Firefighters said they responded after a caller reported a possible house fire. The caller saw the flames while driving by and was able to confirm it was not a house but an outbuilding. Firefighters said crews initially fought the flames outside the barn because of the size of the fire and the unknown stability of the structure. The flames had burned through the roof at that point. The horses that had been in the barn were outside in a fenced-in area, firefighters said. Firefighters said the barn had hay bales and equipment inside, which were burned by the fire. Because hay bales can retain heat and are difficult to extinguish, the hay will likely smolder for days and require monitoring. The residents and animals were allowed to return once crews determined conditions were safe, firefighters said. An investigation determined the fire was accidental and caused by an ember that traveled from an open burn to a manure pile near the barn, firefighters said.
