Our friend had never built a real campfire before this session. The OT stayed beside him the whole time, not directing, just present, which is its own kind of work for a friend who’s learning to regulate himself while building, and while connecting with the people next to him. Both the therapist and the volunteers were part of that. The task doesn’t have to look like therapy to work like therapy. A child gets to build something with his hands, get frustrated when a piece won’t sit right, figure it out, and feel it hold. The stories our friends share with us matter because they’re real social interaction, not a script, not a worksheet, just a kid talking about a campfire to someone who’s actively listening. This is what a nature-based session looks like at Stable Friendships Foundation.
