Condition 02: Your nervous system state. In one study, people leading or riding horses were told an umbrella would open as they passed. It never did. Their heart rates went up anyway, and so did their horses’. (Keeling et al., 2009) Your horse responds to what’s happening in your body. Your breath. Your muscle tone. The tension you haven’t named yet. You can’t bring calm you don’t have. There’s no judgment in that, just something worth noticing. If your horse is restless, a quiet check-in with yourself is a good place to start, before you ask anything of him. This is the second of five conditions for co-regulation. All five are in my latest carousel. Comment NOTES below and I’ll send you Research Note No. 1, the full breakdown with peer-reviewed citations and two decades of paddock observation.
