Safety—or rather, the lack of it—is indeed central to understanding trauma. Trauma typically occurs when an individual feels profoundly unsafe and powerless in the face of a threat. This can be a physical threat, emotional abuse, an accident, a natural disaster, or any situation where an individual’s wellbeing is at risk and they are unable to escape or effectively respond. In my upcoming webinar on trauma-informed physical therapy, we delve into how this sense of insecurity can manifest both psychologically and physically, affecting the musculoskeletal system— a primary area of concern for physical therapists. Physical therapists, with their extensive training in body mechanics, are exceptionally equipped to address these musculoskeletal manifestations.
