In a lot of ways, we are just like our horses… Unpleasant stimulus comes in that we believe threatens our well-being in some way and our first response is to react in an instinctive rather than rational way. We feel threatened by relationships, stress, the stories in our head and we start searching for escape to relieve the unpleasant emotions that come up, that feel like a true, real, and imminent threat. Most of the time, just like horses, we need to stop and face the fear or that thing creating unpleasant emotions and see it for what it is, which is seldom a threat to our safety, but more often discomfort. Unfortunately, when difficult emotions arise, our evolutionary response kicks in and we enter fight, flight or freeze. We stop thinking rationally and let our emotions guide us. However, if instead of looking to relieve the emotion by searching for peace instead of a solution, we can get our brain back on track, out of emotional fight, flight or freeze response, and give rational thought and consideration to the situation. It’s what we want and expect from our horses. It’s not always easy, but it is absolutely possible. Next time one of these events pop up, search for peace—deep breathe, meditate, maybe even go for a horseback ride🐴 We have more control than we think if we can make efforts to take control in the areas that actually belong to us. One reason horses are masterful therapists for our mind is because they help us return to this equilibrium. 🥰🎥 @the.touch.of.a.mustang #mentalhealthtips #blmmustang #studentofthehorse #equinetherapy #lifewithhorses #emotionalregulation #Mustang #horsepower #powerful #horses #equestrian #equine #therapy #inspirational #life #lifelessons
