Come get Rita ready for a Skijor race with me! First things first I make sure she has 24/7 access to hay. I travel with a few different sizes of @haychix hay nets. For this trip I put a full bale in a net for Rita’s overnight stay so she could eat any time she was relaxing in her pen. I also brought two half bale nets full of alfalfa hay so she had snacks while traveling and any time she was standing tied. After setting up her hay nets I brush, saddle, and boot her up. SMB and bell boots protect her tendons as well as protect her from clipping her front legs while running full stride. For this first race I also added a rubber bell boot over her no turn bell boots for a little extra protection. After a long slow warm up, we hook up our rigging and get settled in the gate. Once the track is clear and the skier is ready we race down the track in aims of a clean run. For those who follow along with my journey, you’ll notice I decided to Skijor on Rita! She’s been moving incredibly well while legging her up. She does have some scar tissue on that hind leg. That doesn’t seem to bother her so I’ve decided (with the support of multiple professional opinions) to give Skijoring the OK! So you’ll likely be seeing her on the track a few times this season! 🥰🎥 @tmhokens #skijor #horses #winter #sports #equestrian #cowgirl #ski
