You were never meant to regulate alone. Neither were they. We are taught that self-regulation is a solo mission—something we are supposed to figure out and master on our own. But our nervous systems were never designed to exist in a vacuum. We are biologically wired for connection. This is co-regulation. It’s the foundation of safety, trust, and true partnership. It’s what allows a 1,200-pound prey animal to feel safe in the presence of a human. It’s what allows a human to feel safe in the presence of another human. Before you ask for connection, try building it with these two simple tools: 1. The Anchor (Hand to Heart): Find your own center first. The gentle pressure of a hand on your heart is a powerful somatic cue that you are safe and present in your own body. 2. The Shared Space (Orienting Together): With a friend, partner, or your horse, simply stand together and slowly look around. By non-verbally scanning and settling in the same space, you are co-creating a pocket of safety. Try this today. Notice what shifts. Connection is the most powerful resource we have.
